40 km long pest exclusion fence

Non indigenous pest animals are excluded from an area of 3,400 hectares by building a wire fence 40 km long around a mountain. All the introduced pests are eradicated. 300 volunteers worked for 4 years at an expenditure of $14 million.

Native endangered species will be gradually introduced into the enclosure at Maungatautari.
