40 km long pest exclusion fence

Non indigenous pest animals are excluded from an area of 3,400 hectares by building a wire fence 40 km long around a mountain. All the introduced pests are eradicated. 300 volunteers worked for 4 years at an expenditure of $14 million.

Native endangered species will be gradually introduced into the enclosure at Maungatautari.

Canopy viewing tower

The reason for the limit was due to the collapse of another viewing platform at Cape Creek some years ago. Many lives were lost.







This viewing tower is 16M high. I did not climb up today because I am saving it for our family Xmas outing !
